Ashby Ville was the second of
Scunthorpe’s three speedway venues. The Scunthorpe club started
racing at the purpose-built site in May 1979 after being evicted
from North Lincolnshire Council-owned Quibell Park, home since
1971. The local authority offered the land at Ashby Ville. To mark
the move across town, Scunthorpe changed their nickname from
Saints to Stags. Speedway took place at Ashby Ville until May
1985, when Stags withdrew from the National League. Encountering
difficulties paying the rent, the club blamed falling attendances.
Stock car racing lingered on before the stadium was demolished.
Its site is now occupied by Lakeside Retail Park. The track was
immediately southwest of Ashby Ville roundabout on the A18.
Despite having only rudimentary spectator facilities, Ashby
Ville’s 315m track, the view from which was dominated by the
cooling towers and chimneys of the town’s steelworks, produced
good racing, said to be much better than anything seen at Quibell
Park. Andrew Gallon. |
